Yamunotri Dham

Welcome to Yamunotri

Yamunotri, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,293 meters, is the sacred source of the Yamuna River and one of the four revered sites of the Char Dham Yatra. Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, this ancient temple attracts thousands of devotees seeking spiritual purification. Surrounded by towering peaks and natural hot springs, Yamunotri offers a serene and divine experience, blending spirituality with the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayas.

Spiritual Significance

Yamunotri is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, believed to be the daughter of the Sun God and sister of Yama, the God of Death. According to Hindu mythology, bathing in the Yamuna River is said to cleanse sins and protect devotees from untimely death. The temple, built in the 19th century by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur, is a focal point for devotees undertaking the Char Dham pilgrimage. The black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna, adorned with garlands, is worshipped with deep reverence.

History of Yamunotri

The Yamunotri temple was originally constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal and later rebuilt by Maharani Guleria after damage from natural calamities. The temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya (April/May) and closes on Diwali (October/November) due to heavy snowfall in winter. The deity is moved to Kharsali village during the closure period, where worship continues. The site’s historical and spiritual legacy makes it a cornerstone of Hindu pilgrimage.
