Gangotri Dham

Welcome to Gangotri

Gangotri, located at an altitude of 3,100 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas, is a sacred pilgrimage site and the origin of the holy Ganga River. Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, this revered temple is a vital part of the Char Dham Yatra. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and serene landscapes, Gangotri offers a tranquil and spiritually uplifting experience for devotees and travelers alike.

Spiritual Significance

Gangotri is dedicated to Goddess Ganga, revered as the divine purifier in Hinduism. The Ganga River, believed to have descended from heaven to earth through Lord Shiva’s matted locks, is worshipped for its ability to cleanse sins and grant salvation. According to mythology, King Bhagirath’s penance brought the Ganga to earth to absolve the sins of his ancestors. The Gangotri temple, situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, is a focal point for devotees seeking spiritual liberation.

History of Gangotri

The Gangotri temple was built in the 18th century by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa and later renovated by the royal family of Jaipur. Constructed with white granite, the temple stands as a testament to the region’s rich spiritual heritage. It opens annually on Akshaya Tritiya (April/May) and closes on Diwali (October/November) due to heavy snowfall, with the deity moved to Mukhba village for winter worship. Gangotri’s historical and spiritual legacy continues to draw pilgrims from across the world.
