Kedarnath Dham

Welcome to Kedarnath

Kedarnath, perched at an altitude of 3,583 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas, is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in Hinduism and a key destination of the Char Dham Yatra. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this ancient temple houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and is revered for its spiritual significance and breathtaking surroundings. Nestled amidst snow-clad peaks and rugged terrain, Kedarnath offers devotees a profound connection to divinity and nature.

Spiritual Significance

Kedarnath is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, worshipped here as the destroyer of evil and bestower of blessings. The temple’s Jyotirlinga, a self-manifested lingam, is considered highly sacred, symbolizing Shiva’s cosmic presence. According to legend, the Pandavas built the original temple to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva after the Mahabharata war. Visiting Kedarnath is believed to purify the soul and pave the way for moksha (liberation). The temple’s spiritual aura draws millions of devotees annually.

History of Kedarnath

The Kedarnath temple, believed to date back to the 8th century, was established by Adi Shankaracharya, who revived its spiritual prominence. The current stone structure, built to withstand harsh Himalayan weather, reflects ancient architectural brilliance. The temple has faced natural calamities, including the devastating 2013 Uttarakhand floods, yet remains a resilient symbol of faith. It opens annually on Akshaya Tritiya (April/May) and closes on Bhai Dooj (October/November), with the deity moved to Ukhimath during winter.
